The story I heard is that Laennec saw two children playing telephone and this is how he got the idea for the stethoscope .
Actually the name stethoscope is relatively recent. Laennec called it "auscultator", which was the name used for a long time until stethoscope came along (from "auscultare", the Latin verb for "to listen").
Also, certain types of pneumonias that predominately affect the alveoli can only be detected by percussion. This is because auscultation does not detect sounds originating beyond the bronchial tree. This is why doctors should always do all four steps when they examine a patient (inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation).
