UCSF Advancing Digital Health Humanities Institute

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) seeks applicants for the Advancing Digital Health Humanities Institute beginning in Fall 2024.

This two-year research incubator, funded through the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities, brings eight to ten scholars in the health humanities, digital humanities, and allied disciplines together to develop research projects that use historical and archival materials related to health, wellness, ability, disease, and caretaking. With the guidance of UCSF faculty and staff, awardees will have the opportunity to learn an array of digital humanities methods and approaches to further develop and refine their research projects. Throughout the program, scholars will be trained in digital methods by data science experts and the use of archives as data while also gaining professional skills to support long-term digital projects.

Awardees will have the opportunity to participate in the Institute’s two year research support program, which includes a week-long practicum in November 2024, a three-day virtual training session in Spring 2025, and a research symposium in Fall 2025 where they will share their research. In addition to this research support, awardees will be given a research stipend of $1,000, as well as stipends for travel to in-person events.

This program is open to graduate students, tenured and non-tenured faculty, non-affiliated community activists and independent scholars. Due to the lengthy timeline for digital research projects, the Advancing Digital Health Humanities Institute is most interested in supporting projects early in their development. Strong candidates for the Institute are those who display a strong set of research questions associated with a defined data source, and those who show an interest in learning specific digital tools, skills, or platforms.

Applications are due by Friday, June 28 at 5 p.m. PST.
